Supporting Early Childhood Inclusion within a MTSS Framework

All children, regardless of ability, have a right to access high-quality learning environments in which they fully participate alongside their peers. Providing high-quality inclusive early care and education goes beyond children with disabilities, it also encompasses the idea that all early learning settings provide equitable opportunities for children with diverse backgrounds, languages, abilities, family structures, and life experiences. This workshop will explore how MTSS builds supports for ALL children providing those who have learning differences or who require special education opportunities to access and fully participate alongside their peers in naturally occurring environments.

The Environment as the Third Teacher

Have you ever thought about the voice in your environment? What does your lighting, the materials and other aspect of your environment say? In this workshop participants will analyze the voice of their current or future classroom. Studies show that messages around us, whether absorbed consciously or subconsciously, speak to us. They often unwittingly form our opinions, biases, and guide what we learn. Therefore, a critical look at the environment as the third teacher is an important observation when serving ALL people. Participants of this workshop will hear research joined with practical application towards making the third teacher an environment inclusive for all. This workshop will focus on the student-centered learning, and individualized student needs components of the Multi-Tiered System of Support.

Implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) as a Trauma-Informed Approach for Young Students

The purpose of this interactive presentation is to explore how school leaders and classroom implementers can incorporate trauma-informed practices within a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework for young learners. PBIS provides an effective multi-tiered framework for incorporating the knowledge about childhood trauma into an established system of support rather than a separate competing initiative.
This presentation will briefly review trauma informed MTSS guiding principles and features including teams, use of data, ensuring early access, formal process for selecting interventions, outcome and fidelity measures and on-going professional development. Participants will also be engaged with activities that focus on the Pyramid Model framework and how universal and secondary practices can: 1) create foundations and prevention practices to support safe and nurturing environments, 2) prioritize relationships and connections, and 3) build social-emotional-behavioral wellness practices to promote resiliency.

Autism Acceptance: Our Words Matter

In education settings utilizing Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), teachers are increasingly likely to encounter children with an autism diagnosis who require support across all tiers of intervention. While the early 2000’s saw a push for “autism awareness,” those impacted with the diagnosis and their families now challenge us to strive for a deeper “autism acceptance.” What does it look like for preschool age children to fully understand and accept each other? How can educators foster a welcoming classroom community that allows all children to thrive regardless of the challenges they might face? What is the best way to guide children when they notice one another’s strengths and weaknesses? This presentation will engage participants in a thoughtful discussion that will challenge prior conceptions of autism, ensure that tiered interventions are tailored to each individual child’s needs, and provide language to create radically inclusive learning spaces.

The Long-Term Impact of Executive Function on Learning for All Children

Executive function is about self-regulation, often defined as a core set of skills that include inhibitory control, confidence building, working memory, and cognitive flexibility. Developing the ability to self-regulate including learning-related social behaviors, such as listening to and following directions, staying on task, and problem-solving in the early years positively influences academic success at PreK and beyond. When examining a Multi-Tiered System of Support model, it's important to consider how there is universal promotion of (executive function) skills to help every individual learner achieve their fullest potential. Join us as we explore data and data-based decision-making, a critical component of MTSS, that demonstrate the importance of executive function for learning success.

10 Ways to Decrease Stress in Your Classroom

This training will provide information, activity ideas and tools to help ease the worries and anxieties of children in the classroom. In accordance with the MTSS processes, this workshop will challenge the attendees to change the way in which they have traditionally worked to support the social/emotional needs of students in their classroom. Participants will be able to define various sources of stress, recognize symptoms and learn techniques and activities that can be applied to help children cope with stress or alleviate it altogether. They will also be able to identify the ten strengths to build resiliency in young children. Teachers may benefit personally by using these techniques throughout the day to manage their own stress, which will increase their ability to alleviate the behavioral concerns before they occur in their classroom.

Using Technology to Stay Connected-Lessons Learned from a Pandemic

When faced with social distancing guidelines that hinder our ability to physically be together, it is more important than ever to find ways to connect. The purpose of this training is to reflect on how educators can use technology to support all children and families through the integration of system changes that are sustainable in an effort to promote equitable access to high quality learning experiences and interactions. We will reflect on how we connected with staff, children, and families in response to the pandemic, and how we can use the information we learned to transition from an emergency response to best practice ensuring that all children and families' needs are being met. Throughout this training, participants will explore diverse stakeholders’ needs, discuss ways to support them through an MTSS lens, and develop an action plan to move from reactive to preemptive practices.

De-stress the distress of systems change work through implementation of adult wellness practices within your MTSS framework. According to the Learning Policy Institute Study 2017, 85% of teachers reported a work-life imbalance affecting their ability to teach. With the current pandemic stress and fatigue felt by most educators, now more than ever, the MTSS framework should support resiliency and self-regulation for ALL adults who work with young children. This interactive session will explore the scientific skills that build support for growth and learning that underlies a healthy sense of self. Participants are invited to experience a variety of self-care strategies such as mindfulness meditation, appreciative inquiry, compassionate communication and trauma-sensitive language and movement. Adult Wellness resources, action plan and fluency-building tips for your MTSS framework will be provided.

Culturally Responsive Practices

In supporting children’s academic and social skills, the school community must be committed to the belief that all children should be educated in the most inclusive learning environment. An essential component for a Multi-Tiered System of Supports to thrive includes culturally responsive practices. Culturally responsive practices are essential in providing meaningful and inclusive learning experiences that support a sense of identity and a sense of belonging. In this workshop, Early Childhood Educators will explore culturally responsive practices to develop a deeper awareness of the role culture plays in supporting children’s learning. In the teacher’s expectation to educate the child effectively, it requires an understanding of the child’s culture or specific family cultural dynamics, and social life at home. Educators will gain an appreciation of the cultural perspectives and strengths of the children and families in their school community. Through reflection discussion, and practice, participants will learn to utilize culturally responsive teaching strategies to meet student needs associated with various cultural backgrounds and how they can create bridges to the children and families in their programs.

Caring for Children - An Organized Process

Throughout every educational year early care & education providers engage a variety of training opportunities showing us how to manage the educational, social, emotional and cognitive needs of children and their families. We engage daily practices, weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual routines with a myriad of cascading deadlines. How do high quality providers keep all of these caring routines and deadlines organized? In the age of Covid-19 there just might be a new system of supports emerging which can help every childcare provider, teacher and administrator stay up with ever increasing lists of duties necessary in the maintenance of clean and healthy learning environments. This training will introduce simple tools and practices which will help keep every area of your home-daycare or childcare center organized, safe, healthy and free from the germs which cause illnesses to spread. Every attendee will leave with swag to assist them in the implementation of new systems to support a spectacularly clean and operationally organized early care and education center. It is impossible to set up a classroom to achieve MTSS framework and individualize learning to meet the needs of every child without an organized classroom routine. Engaging all staff members in the support of these classroom, center and outdoor routines can be a fun-filled teamwork enhancer which engages the children in the care for their own environments too! We would love the opportunity to share how these tools lead to Sweet Teams!

Empowering Children as Young Advocates through Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

Through a Universal Design for Learning framework, discover how children establish a strong sense of self-identity, and progress from advocating for their own needs to advocating for others. Drawing from the Infant/Toddler Curriculum Framework and Preschool Curriculum Framework, learn how to support young children from 0-5 in their emerging advocacy skills: from demonstrating respect for an infant’s emotions and choices, to giving preschoolers the opportunities to build their independence. In this virtual training, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with other educators to explore different strategies that promote self-identity and advocacy skills from the very beginning of a child’s life.

Sing and Sign: Meeting the Needs of ALL Students

Singing songs while integrating American Sign Language (ASL) are powerful multi-sensory and joyful experiences makes our brain active. Research states that integrating singing and signing into your literacy component develops various early literacy skills which are critical to children's future reading performance. Furthermore, the combination of singing/chanting and kinesthetic activities (hand games/rhythm patterns) develop students' social and emotional domain while creating a positive climate. This multi-sensory approach makes learning fun and exciting and meets the needs of all students.
